Fanatics from all religions are afraid of "bloody rains" and tides in the Baltic Sea and the apocalypse that follows, but scientists have refuted the unpleasant myth.
The biologists' version is more prosaic, explanations were given by Sergei Scarlato from the Institute of Cytology of the Russian Academy of Sciences in St. Petersburg. In the course of research, it was found that algae from the category of dinoflagellates, which feed on both organic and non-organic compounds, give a red tint to the water.
Algae are very tenacious and they feel comfortable in any environment. In suitable conditions, they multiply very quickly and there is indeed a danger for fish and birds living near water bodies. The fact is that algae in the course of their vital activity release a sufficient amount of nerve poison, which is deadly for small birds and fish. This also happens for protective purposes, plankton can release such chemicals to protect against competitors, or when there is a lack of substances necessary for development.
