Doctors discovered an exotic disease in a resident of the regional center Podolsk, Odessa region, reports its own correspondent for the news agency "Route E-95".

In the surgical department of the hospital, during the operative removal of the compaction on the patient's cheek, a worm of a filamentous shape about 10 cm in length was taken out of the skin.

According to doctors, the woman has a rare parasitic disease - "dirofilariasis".

“The tightness on the cheek appeared a week ago, then disappeared, and then appeared in another place,” said patient T.

According to epidemiologists, over the past eight years, this is the third case of detection of this exotic disease for this area.

Dirofilariasis mainly affects animals, especially dogs. A person becomes infected when bitten by a mosquito that has visited infected animals.

“Fortunately, the parasite does not multiply in humans. But the larva that got into the bite site grows up to 10-15 cm in a few months and affects the places of the body where it got. There is a possibility of introducing the larva with blood into other places of the skin and mucous membranes,”the doctors say.

Treatment of this disease is surgical. Sometimes the parasite comes out by itself - after the abscess breaks out.

15 years ago in Ukraine, isolated cases of dirofilariasis were recorded per year. Now there are several hundred. It is often caused by stray dogs and intense mosquito breeding.

Prevention of this disease is protection from mosquito bites, fighting stray dogs, deworming, disinfection of dogs.
