In the Brazilian city of Fortaleza, Ceara state, a woman who doctors could not get out of a coma woke up when she was given to hold her newborn baby. This is reported by the Daily Mail.
28-year-old Amanda da Silva was admitted to the hospital in the last weeks of pregnancy after an epileptic seizure. Doctors feared that new seizures could lead to the death of both the woman and the fetus, so she underwent a cesarean section, and then immersed her in an artificial coma due to complications.
A few days later, the threat to the woman's life passed. After that, Da Silva stopped receiving sedatives, but she never regained consciousness. Despite the efforts of the doctors, she did not move and did not respond to painful stimuli.
At the suggestion of a nurse, a newborn was brought to the woman. Although she remained unconscious, her heartbeat increased after the baby's touch and tears began to flow from her eyes. From that moment on, da Silva's condition began to improve, and after 20 days she was discharged.
“We weren't expecting such rapid changes at all,” said the nurse. "The entire medical team cried with happiness and relief." According to her, she cannot explain such a reaction, but believes that the importance of contact between mother and child should not be underestimated.
