In the north of Tanzania, near the border with Kenya, there is the most alkaline lake on the planet - Natron. The water in it can reach 60 ° C, while it is so salty that it is fatal to almost all living things.
In this regard, an eerie phenomenon is observed near Lake Natron: upon contact with water, animals instantly die, and their lifeless bodies are overgrown with minerals that turn the poor fellows into terrible statues. Tourists who come there can often see petrified birds and animals trapped in the lake.
When photographer Nick Brandt saw it, he simply could not resist not to capture them on camera. This is how a whole series of unique shots appeared, to create which Nick had to place the frozen figures in “live” positions. Thanks to his idea, according to the photographer, the victims were able to return to life, albeit only in his photographs.
However, not all living creatures are threatened by the water of the lake. Despite its danger, it is also an excellent medium for growing small flamingos. These birds fly here specially to nest on the salt islands of Natron. Since the nests are surrounded by deadly waters, no predators will be able to reach them.

There are two versions of the name of this strange Tanzanian lake. The most common of them is that he was nicknamed Natron because of the huge amount of the mineral of the same name contained in it. According to the second version, the lake got its name from the color of the water, as Natron translates as "red".
