Representatives of a tribe inhabiting North Sentinel Island and not making contact with the outside world killed a tourist from the United States, according to NDTV, citing police.

Seven fishermen who brought American tourist John Allen Chau to the island were detained. The fishermen reported that they saw the tribe attack the American with a bow and arrow and then partially buried him in the sand on the beach. The authorities of the island union territories of India sent helicopters to search for the American's body, but they cannot land on the island, since its inhabitants are hostile to any attempt to approach them.

As reported by India Today, citing local media, the American was a missionary. The Andaman Sheekha newspaper writes that the American "had visited the Andaman and Nicobar Islands five times in the past and was eager to meet the Sentilian tribes in order to preach Christianity."

The population of the tribe inhabiting North Sentinel Island, according to data for 2011, was 40 people. As the channel notes, they are known for avoiding contact with the outside world.
