Scientists still do not fully know how some of the most expensive minerals on earth - diamonds are formed. It is known that the largest of them are formed at a depth of 150-200 km and keep the secrets of the Earth's composition. Most often, large minerals are found in South Africa, but Canadian mining company Dominion Diamond Mines has announced the discovery of a large diamond in North America. This is an absolute record for this region.

The 552-carat yellow diamond was recovered from the Diavik diamond mine, located 200 kilometers south of the Arctic Circle. The abrasive surface of a mineral the size of a hen's egg suggests that it has come a long and difficult way before appearing on the surface.

The value of the discovered diamond has not yet been estimated. After the announcement of the value, it will be divided into several parts and carefully polished. Most likely, they will be used to make jewelry, which will be put up for sale. Their cost will certainly amount to several million dollars - after all, this is the seventh largest mineral discovered in the current century.

The second largest diamond in North America is the Diavik Foxfire, which weighs 187.7 carats. It was discovered in 2015 and a year later displayed at the Smithsonian Institution next to the famous Hope Diamond.

The largest diamonds, as mentioned above, are found in southern Africa. In 2015, Lucara Diamonds discovered a 1,111-carat stone. There is only the Cullinan stone found in 1905, from the fragments of which jewelry for the royal family of Great Britain was made.
