A NASA team found a distant relative of a shrimp and one of the tentacles of a jellyfish under an ice sheet in Antarctica

Scientists examined the ice sheet in the western part of Antarctica in an area at least 19 kilometers from the open sea. They lowered the camera to a depth of more than 180 meters to look at the ice, and saw an orange shrimp-like amphipod of the family Lysianassoidea, about seven centimeters long, floating around the camera cable.

“We acted on the assumption that there was nothing there. And it was a shrimp you would love to have on your plate,”said ice specialist Robert Bindshadler of NASA.

In addition, scientists have found a tentacle, which they believe belongs to a jellyfish about 30 centimeters in size. According to them, this is the first case of detection of such complex organisms under such a layer of ice.

“(Scientists) look at the equivalent of a drop of water in a swimming pool, which they expect no one lives in, and in that drop they find not one living thing, but two. We have no idea what's going on there,”said Stacy Kim, a biologist at the Marine Laboratories in Moss Landing, Calif., Quoted by AP.

The main mystery, according to the researchers, is how these creatures ate at such a depth where there is no light and, as it was believed, only a few microbes live. Due to the remoteness of the place where animals were found from the open sea, biologists are inclined to believe that amphipods and jellyfish did not come from afar, but live under the ice.
