The oil spill has long been a taboo topic that, in the event of publicity, can hurt the budgets of the Asia-Pacific region. News regarding the collision of tankers with oil should not be made public. October incident in the Pacific
In mid-October, two oil tankers collided west of Bella Bella Sanctuary, located off the central coast of British Columbia, Canada. One ship was damaged and ran aground. The result was an oil spill along the Pacific Ocean coastline.
Here is what the Canadian press reports: “The tug ran aground on October 13 with 2,400 liters of oil on board. Having received a hole, the vessel poured its contents into the Pacific Ocean, where, in addition to oil, there were contaminants from the engine room. Divers reported that they were able to remove 1,200 liters of a mixture of oil and seawater. However, there are still several thousand liters of diesel fuel on board.
Contaminants have caused the death of shellfish
The oil spill instantly triggered the closure of the bivalve molluscs that inhabit the Seaforth and Gale Passage canals. This has made its own adjustments to the work of fisheries. Thus, the ecological catastrophe damaged the ecological development of the region.
Lack of response from Canadian legislators
However, this news did not appear in the media. And this despite the fact that in the near future it is planned to pass a law that will oblige oil companies to control oil spills on land. The lack of international interest in the news is all the more strange considering the recent royal visit to British Columbia. It was organized to highlight the importance of maintaining a healthy ecological environment along the coastline. This once again shows how little Canadian lawmakers are doing to create preventive measures that effectively confront such disasters.
Access to the Pacific Ocean
The central coast of British Columbia provides Canada with access to the Pacific Ocean. On the other hand, this region is, in fact, a channel for the transportation of oil and liquefied natural gas from the neighboring province of Alberta, which is the main raw material supplier in the country. Sadly, the incident that happened in October is almost routine in British Columbia. With proper publicity, this could provoke a real wave of protests. However, even now, environmental activists are going to demand a complete ban on the movement of oil tankers along the central coast.
The region has a reputation for being one of the most unspoiled and desolate places on Earth. And Canada is one of the largest oil exporters in the world. Almost all of the export flow is directed to the neighboring United States of America. Most of the country's oil reserves are located in the oil (tar) sands of Alberta. Thus, thousands of liters of oil pass through the central coast every day, and the federal government does not regulate this situation in any way. It seems that the ruling structures have adopted a position of complete non-interference.

Rather than agreeing to a traffic ban, the Liberal government, led by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, has proposed setting up a fund to remove the effects of oil spills. The Canadian authorities are not sorry to spend $ 1.5 billion on this.
