One of the reasons for the appearance of unstable weather in the Russian regions was the transition of the Earth to a new ice age. This opinion was expressed in an interview with a TASS correspondent by Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, scientific director of the Department of Cryosophy at Tyumen State University Vladimir Melnikov.

“I judge the changes based on my experience with the study of permafrost, so we associate what is happening in the permafrost with what is happening in the atmosphere. If we talk about the raging winds that are not only in Moscow, but also in Europe and America, then this suggests that our planet is now going through a transitional period from one state to another. If we look at the warm and cold cycles of fluctuations of different periods, then we are living out the interglacial, having lived for about 10 thousand years, and there are about 1,000 years left before the new ice age, that is, we are approaching a cold snap,”the RAS academician explained.

He added that the Earth is entering a cold 35-year cycle. In these transitional periods, according to the scientist, "certain peculiarities, abrupt changes" are quite possible. “And we are now seeing what happened in Moscow, this is a rare phenomenon in air currents. It seems to me that this is one of the manifestations of the transition period from a warm to a cold cycle, then gradually it will all smooth out,”said the agency's interlocutor.

On the eve of Moscow and the Moscow region survived the blow of the elements - a squally wind fell trees, advertising structures, public transport stops, tore off roofs. According to the latest data, 16 people became victims of the natural disaster (11 in Moscow and 5 in the Moscow region). More than 100 people still remain in hospitals. In the capital, according to the mayor Sergei Sobyanin, a squall knocked down 14 thousand trees. Two thousand cars were damaged, as well as the roofs of 243 houses.

A hurricane wind with gusts of up to 18 meters per second on May 29 caused a blackout for about 5.6 thousand residents of the Ryazan region. In the Vladimir region, for the same reasons, about 10 thousand people were left without electricity. In the Tula region, according to the regional head office of the Ministry of Emergency Situations, about 700 people in the Venevsky district remained de-energized.
