Climate warming in Russia will continue throughout the 21st century, while the rate of temperature rise will be higher than the average on Earth, according to the national report "The Global Climate and Soil Cover of Russia" presented at the VV Dokuchaev Soil Institute.
“Without exception, all modern climate models predict a warming of the Russian climate throughout the 21st century, which is significantly higher than the average global warming for any of the considered scenarios of anthropogenic impact on the global climate system,” the report says.
As the scientists clarify, the greatest increase in surface temperature is expected in winter, increasing to the north, reaching maximum values in the Arctic. In summer, on the contrary, the zoning of warming in Russia is practically not expressed.
“Changes in the frequency and / or intensity of extreme weather events are expected due to global climate change. Annual highs and lows of air temperature will increase in most of Russia; in all seasons, an increase in the number of days with abnormally high air temperatures and a decrease in the number of days with extremely low night air temperatures prevail,”the report says.
At the same time, statistically significant regional changes in the duration of heat and cold waves are expected in a significant part of the territory of Russia by the middle of the XXI century and will significantly increase by its end, spreading to almost the entire territory of the country.
A faster reduction in the duration of winter cold waves is expected than an increase in the duration of summer heat waves, the report said.
