Remember the acclaimed book by R. Moody "Life After Life" with testimonies of people who survived the state of clinical death and thanks to the efforts of doctors who returned to the world of the living. They all remembered the dark tunnel, the light at the end of it, that, as it were, they saw their lifeless body distantly, and after being in the sea of light, where (in some cases) they met with deceased loved ones, they reunited with the abandoned earthly shell.
With the development of resuscitation capabilities, which increased the chances of doctors to revive a person who is in a state of clinical death as a result of an accident or cardiac arrest, the number of those who have such a chance has increased. This caused a surge of interest in the analysis of the survivors' experiences and at the same time provoked speculations about how legitimate the efforts of resuscitators are from the point of view of religion: is not such a "violent" interference a counteraction destined from above, do not the achievements of medicine contradict the will of God?
In his book "Freedom of the Spirit", the French scientist Christian Mehl examines the phenomenon of the return of the spirit to a lifeless body in different aspects. After all, dematerialization - the exit of the soul from the body, and even more so its return to the abandoned shell, as Moody's characters talk about - generates a lot of questions that are unsolvable within the framework of modern science. At this stage, we should accept this, says Christian Mehl. Such a "point of humility", he writes, is necessary in order to be open to the analysis of hypotheses of what happens to the human personality when the soul leaves its material shell - it dematerializes.
The first reaction when faced with an unusual phenomenon is fear, the scientist notes. Fear prompts you to deny the phenomenon. Denial is the most primitive way to dismiss what has happened: "this cannot be, because it can never be!" But the factual evidence, the confessions of people who have experienced clinical death, make a hole in the limitations of materialistic consciousness. The task of those trying to analyze cases of dematerialization is to link observation, reflection and experimentation into a logical chain.
The ability to dematerialize, to leave one's body, speaking poetically, to soar in spirit, has been known since the times of Ancient Egypt, from the mystical practice of the priests of all world religions, and in later times from the experiments of those who were later considered saints in European religious culture. The ability to introduce oneself into a state of ecstasy with the help of drugs, self-hypnosis, and special rituals is known to a select few - those initiated into the sacraments of religious cults of all continents, with the exception of Antarctica. At the same time, both adherents of these cults and anthropologists, physicians and psychologists avoid any explanation of the phenomenon of the liberation of the spirit from the body shell.
Christian Mehl, although he urges people to come to terms with the imperfection of modern knowledge, still tries to find explanations for both the mechanism of dematerialization and the very process of the soul's “return” from the other world.
How convincing is his reasoning? As applied to the human personality, the concept of "energy" has already entered the circle of determining its significance, be it a politician, an artist or just a close and beloved person. The phrase "energy of thought" is also approved in our lexicon. "Thoughts" are not as manifestations of intelligence, but as a force capable of influencing life processes. Modern science, armed with powerful and subtle technology, testifies that this energy can acquire an effective force even at a distance.
Based on this, Christian Mehl goes further. The experience experienced by people who experienced a state of clinical death and subsequent return from the "other world" testifies that a person has an energy body in addition to a material one. This body is plastic, it is capable of assuming different forms, allowing it not to depend on the physical body. Including the forms of flora and fauna. It also possesses vision, hearing, touch, telepathic gifts, the ability to receive and transmit information, to communicate between our world and other worlds of the Galaxy. These properties, unlimited by material obstacles, make possible communication with the dead, movement outside the space-time framework, free penetration through any obstacles. The driving force of these miracles is the energy of thought, the spirituality.

The energy body is woven from various molecular vibrations. It lives in a dimension of reality different from the material body and does not depend on the laws of cause and effect. It does not feel pain, nor the flight of time, nor the scale of space, it is absolutely autonomous from all earthly references.
These properties, Mel believes, explain the phenomena of parapsychology, telekinesis, clairvoyance, the influence of thought at a distance, etc., as well as the appearance of twins. The vibrational field possessed by the energy body, consisting of many (their number reaches seven) levels, and makes the connection between sound, color and light. This is how the doubles generated by vibrations arise, the inexplicable appearance of which causes a lot of emotions and hypotheses that cannot be confirmed. One of the hypotheses put forward by psychotherapists suggests that this is a hallucination. It occurs when, due to cardiac arrest or because of neuropsychological at the time of clinical death, a sharp release of endomorphins can be triggered. Something similar happens in seizures of epilepsy, in schizophrenia during depression.
Christian Mehl believes that the phenomenon of the appearance of twins makes it possible to penetrate deeper into the study of the energy body, to understand what makes up its essence to a greater extent - personality, materiality of thought, spiritual origin? An energy body is a substance that exists in the Universe like an electron and, vibrating, takes different forms, including people from the real world, and sometimes those who have already left our world. In this, the author sees the clue to the appearance of doubles, ghosts and everything that people call evil.
Another aspect considered by Mel is how you can get out of your own body? At the moment of approaching imminent death, when there is a cardiac arrest and cessation of brain activity, with the help of devices it is possible to record an active concentration of thought, short-term, like a flash. This outbreak is a source of information about the process actually taking place and testifies to the subsequent release of the spirit to freedom. Once freed from the shell, the spirit receives in some cases a parapsychological gift that is capable of acting for some time until it fades away. This, says Christian Mehl, testifies to the spirit's ability to self-dematerialize, a sharp, explosive release of energy from the body shell. This phenomenon provoked experiments that have become popular since the end of the 19th century - a fascination with magnetism, spiritualism and similar miracles.
The author of "Freedom of the Spirit" concludes: our soul is capable of radiating energy, being on the other side of the "I", existing separately, regardless of its past dwelling, since the nature of the spirit is not subject to the psycho-emotional state; consciousness goes into the mystical world, where then gradually degrades, dissolves … Its vitality in “that world” depends on the power of the energy possessed by the spirit: one spiritual charge dies out quickly, the other retains its strength for centuries.

Having accepted his theory about the autonomy of the spirit embodied in the energy body, one can find explanations for many mysteries - from the gift of Kassandra and Vanga, the miracles demonstrated by Indian yogis, to the manifestations of the power of Christian saints. How convincing are Christian Mel's judgments? It is clear that they require serious support from scientific data.
