Everyone who crosses the threshold of a rural school in Ozeryany (Chernihiv region) does not pass by an amazing mirror, which is more than 300 years old. Many come back here again and again, looking at it again. But in the village they are proud not so much of the age of the mirror, as of its miraculous anti-aging properties.

On that terrible day, Semyon - the only son of the well-known merchant Badanin in the province - did not return home alone. An elderly gypsy came with him. In the city they had won a fairly large sum at cards together, and now the winnings had to be divided.
As happens in such cases, they decided to wash their luck with vodka. However, after the drink, a furious dispute erupted between the partners, and the hot-tempered gypsy snatched a knife from his pocket. But the young Badanin was more agile. Three bullets fired from his revolver pierced the enemy's chest.
With some caution, Semyon approached the body lying on the floor, and at that time a strong gust of wind opened the window and at once extinguished all the candles in the room. The guy rushed to the window, and when he turned around, froze in horror.
The gypsy's corpse was already in another place, under a mirror hanging on the wall, and the moonlight, strangely refracted in it, fell directly on his body. From the mirror itself a terrible beast gazed at Semyon; a wide open mouth with huge fangs, eyes that burned with hellfire, sharp ears and thick black hair.
