Yes, yes, I am aware that history does not tolerate the subjunctive mood, but there is such a niche as “alternative history”. Many people like to construct there events that could happen. But here it is important to note that "alternative history" is not some kind of fairy tale or fantasy, but often a simulation of events taking into account all the factors and circumstances that existed at the time of the branching out with the present.
Let's think about what would have happened to Europe if the USSR had thrown back the German troops only to its borders? Would the Allies have enough strength to finish off Hitler without us?
Definitely not.
The United States and Britain would not have had enough ground forces; Hitler had more than 200 divisions on the eastern front in 1944. The lion's share from there would have gone to the Western Front. And even if the allies went on the landing, they would surely have suffered a major defeat, and Hitler would have further strengthened his position, he would have created an impregnable fortress from the west and would have excluded any landing of the allies for ten years ahead. Plus, he would have the opportunity to complete the development of new weapons, including nuclear. Germany could wage a protracted war of attrition of adversaries, remaining the dominant force in Europe - all enterprises on the continent would continue to work for them. And such a development of events could be avoided only by the advance of the Red Army.
By the way, you can recall another document of the American establishment from 1940, when the Germans had not yet attacked the USSR, but actually owned all the resources of Europe. And then many politicians and businessmen sent a letter to Roosevelt, which concluded that in the near future the United States is not able to crush Hitler's might, and therefore the country needs to focus on defending its American continent. Moreover, if the States are unable to trade with Europe, America's economy will constantly deteriorate. And there would be no financial power of America in the form in which it is now.
And of course, Hitler in any case would have tried to repeat the attack on the USSR, in fact, the Soviet troops did not stop at the border with Europe, and without hesitation finished off the "reptile" in his lair.
