On Saturday, February 18, 2017, a shark injured in the attack was discovered on New Smyrna Beach, which is located in the US state of Florida and is considered the most dangerous beach in the world due to aggressive shark attacks on people.
Tammy Morris, a beach security official, determined that these were the remains of a blacktip gray shark, which could be more than one and a half meters in length.
This is perhaps the most disturbing aspect of this story. It seems that the formidable shark itself has become easy prey for some much more dangerous predator lurking in the ocean.
"It is not known what type of predator bit off this shark's tail, or how far offshore the attack was made," Morris said.
The rescuer posted a photo of the victim of the failed hunt on social networks and wrote: “Who could have done this? I think there is someone very big there."
Some beach goers speculated that a huge 4-meter white shark, nicknamed Catherine by oceanographers, was sighted off the coast of Florida last month.
It is unknown if Katherine is responsible for the death of a shark that was thrown by the surf on New Smyrna Beach, but this incident is a serious reminder of the dangers that lurk in the ocean depths.
