A rare black Amur leopard was born in the German city of Hodenhagen in the famous Serengeti safari park
The baby, who was named Pulchen, became the only black cub in the litter. He was much smaller than his brothers, who did not allow him from his mother's breast.
“His mother and brothers are of the usual color - they are spotted. Pulchen was the smallest and looked miserable and hungry. His brothers constantly hurt him. He lived with his family for only 12 days,”said Regina Khamza, an employee of the zoo.
The cub was weaned from its mother and fed artificially. Now the baby is almost three months old. He gained weight and grew to 60 centimeters. Every day at 3 pm, the zoo staff put on a feeding show for Serengeti visitors and journalists.
The Amur leopard is an endangered animal. According to experts, there are no more than 40 of them left in the wild, a little more than 200 animals of this species live in zoos. These predators live in Siberia, near the Amur River, in China and North Korea. Large males can weigh over 150 kg.
Black Amur leopards, called panthers, are on the verge of extinction. There are no more than five of them in the world. Due to its thick and beautiful coat, the black leopard was very popular with hunters. Also, his internal organs were used in Asian medicine.
