For a long time, scientists believed that Europeans did not mummify dead people. However, as it turned out, this opinion was false. New data appeared after the study of some burials on the island of South Uist (Scotland), reports the journal Archeology.
Experts have found several skeletons belonging to a man and a woman. They were immediately called "Frankenstein's mummies." Analysis showed that the remains are about 3 thousand years old, but outwardly they look like they were buried very recently. Consequently, the bodies could be mummified.
According to Mike Parker Pearson, an archaeologist at University College London, the mummification process was carried out using the same technology as in ancient Egypt. This find is the first on European territory, which dates back to the Bronze Age.
It is also important to take into account that the remains were in peat bogs, which have all the conditions to prevent the decomposition of bodies. In the course of a more detailed analysis, it turned out that the woman and the man are composed of parts of different people. For example, a woman had a male skull and also not her arms. Scientists believe that thanks to such "compositions" it was easier for the deceased to meet with their loved ones in the next world (at least the ancient people believed in this).
