Scientists at Harvard University on the eve of Christmas announced that they predict the transformation of the Earth into an analogue of Mars. Astrophysicist Anjali Tripathi said that humanity is doomed, since the planet is constantly losing its own atmosphere.
The phenomenon itself is designated as an atmospheric escape and, according to the scientist, is absolutely natural. As part of a recent conversation with reporters, she said that about 180 kg of hydrogen and almost 3 kg of helium leave the Earth every second. Tripathi points out that this can cause such a massive change in the composition of the Earth's atmosphere that life on the planet will disappear completely.
She clarified that the atmosphere today is the only thing that allows life to exist and flourish. The astrophysicist emphasizes that such a prospect should be frightening, since Mars could have had a similar terrestrial climate system and now is not a refuge for living organisms. Presumably, the Red Planet could also go through an atmospheric escape process in which the hydrogen disappeared leaving oxygen. It was the latter, says Triphati, that turned Mars into the Red Planet by actively oxidizing everything on its surface. The scientist adds that today it is worth preparing for the consequences. At the same time, several billion years remain before the possibility of realizing the table of a gloomy perspective.
