Global warming could blow up the whole of Siberia! Recent studies by Russian scientists have shown that the warming that followed the Ice Age was the reason for the appearance of giant craters in the Barents Sea. The fact is that at the bottom of the reservoir there are huge burials of gas hydrates. According to geologists, as the temperature rises, the gases began to explode, which has already led to the appearance of kilometer-long depressions at the bottom of the sea.
Today, similar natural burial grounds exist in some regions of Siberia, which means that if global warming does occur, then dangerous Siberian storage facilities threaten to turn into a giant bomb. What can this lead to? How dangerous will the consequences be for the inhabitants of the region and for the whole of humanity?
Scientists discovered the first craters in the Barents Sea region in the early 90s. However, it was not possible to conduct large-scale studies and find out the reason for their occurrence, because there were no necessary technologies, but they appeared almost 30 years later and what scientists were able to discern made them horrified.
The largest crater, scientists say, looks more like a giant pool. Its width is 1 km and its depth is 300 meters. Fifty houses with a height of 10 floors can easily submerge there.
Careful analysis of the gas showed it to be methane. It was formed deep underground in hot zones of hydrocarbon-bearing rock about 20 thousand years ago.
A massive methane release already led to a global catastrophe many thousands of years ago. Then, after the glaciers melted, the rays of the sun penetrated the water and heated an explosive mixture of gases. As a result of the explosion, many species of animals disappeared, and the appearance of the planet changed beyond recognition.
It sounds incredible, but along with the ancient craters in the Barents Sea, scientists have discovered more than 600 new ones, of which methane seeps through cracks in the earth's crust, most of them are in Siberia, but what if this gas storage explodes again?
Scientists assure that the next global warming is inevitable. The air temperature increases by 0.2 ° every year. This means that the remaining polar ice will no longer be able to contain the pressure of methane, and only decades separate us from a natural disaster.
