At the site of the ruins of the burial temple of Pharaoh Amenhotep III in Kom el-Hitan in Luxor, 12 statues of the goddess of war Sekhmet were found. Mustafa Vaziri, Secretary General of the Supreme Council for Antiquities of the ARE, spoke about the findings.
According to Vaziri, the found statues are completely identical to 27 other statues of the goddess, the discovery of which was announced a few days ago. In early December, archaeologists found in the same place monuments to the goddess, traditionally depicted with the head of a lioness, made of black granite, the height of most of them reached two meters. Despite the fact that many of the statues were split, experts note their good condition and preservation. On some statues, the goddess is depicted sitting on a throne with the ancient Egyptian symbol of life - "ankh" ("key of the Nile") in her right hand and a scroll of papyrus in her left. In total, since the beginning of December, scientists have removed 39 statues from the sand.
“Including with the help of these artifacts, we hope to soon establish the exact location of the temple, which was completely destroyed, find other treasures during the reign of Pharaoh Amenhotep III and in the future start a project to restore it,” he said.
