In the west of modern Belize in Shunantunich, archaeologists have excavated the tomb of the Mayan ruler. Information about the find appeared on July 28.

The structure with the tomb in it was located at a depth of about 5-8 meters. In addition to the remains of human bones, jade and pottery were found in the burial. According to scientists, the size and contents of the tomb testify to the importance of the person buried in it. Some local ruler supposedly rested in this one.

As shown by a preliminary study of the found remains, a middle-aged man was buried. In addition, the tomb also contained the bones of an animal, most likely it was a jaguar, which was buried in the same grave with the owner.

It is noted that excavations have been underway in Shunantunic since the distant 1890s. This area is officially a Mayan cultural monument. There are 25 palaces and temples on the territory of the ancient town, the most famous of which is the 40-meter El Castillo, as well as 6 different squares.
