The strange "eye" on the surface of the Earth was first seen by astronauts in 1982, when they viewed our planet from space. Before that, no one knew about the existence of an anomaly on the territory of the Sahara Desert (in its Mauritanian part), because the "Eye" is already 50 km in diameter and can be seen only from a considerable height.

The Rishat structure, or as it is also called the "Eye of the Sahara", is perfectly round, which causes controversy about its origin even now.

So, one of the first was the theory that this artifact appeared as a result of a meteorite falling to Earth. But this theory was quickly refuted, because the bottom of the structure is perfectly flat, and if it were a "imprint" of a meteorite, the bottom would be in the shape of a concave funnel.

According to another theory, this is the earth's crust, which, for unknown reasons, rose, while the soil over this place was gradually collapsing. Today, the most probable theory of the formation of the Richat structure is the statement that this is a volcano crater, which has been modified for a long time.

It is also interesting that the "Eye of the Sahara" is not long, not small, but 600 million years old. Due to its considerable age, some believe that Guell-Er-Rishat is a surviving proof of the existence of Atlantis, while others argue that it is an unusual art of alien origin.

And while scientists cannot explain what this strange phenomenon on the surface of the Earth is, the Richat structure has become a landmark in Mauritania. And in the closest village to the "Eye of the Sahara", Wadan, the tourism business is flourishing: most of the residents work as guides and will gladly show the pride of the desert and tell the legends associated with Guell Er Rishat.
