The secrets of the Third Reich have haunted the minds of historians from the moment this state ceased to exist.
The Nazis were noticed for conducting occult rituals, creating nuclear weapons, numerous gene projects, experiments that were put on prisoners of war.
But there is one theory that more than others attracts the attention of conspiracy theorists and supporters of alternative history. This is a theory about a secret Nazi base in Antarctica.
Hitler began to take an interest in the South Pole in the late 1930s. This was the main reason for equipping the expedition, which was named "New Swabia". For the Germans, this was already the third polar expedition in the 20th century, but the first for the Hitlerite state.
The purpose of the expedition was to explore the coast of Antarctica and find there a place suitable for a research base and, possibly, for a secret bunker. The expedition ship was equipped with a seaplane to explore the landscape of the southern continent. An experienced German polar explorer Alfred Reacher became the head of the expedition. The vessel left the port of Hamburg and arrived in Antarctica a few weeks later.
After taking photographs of a vast area of Antarctica and leaving there figures of an eagle as signs of their presence, the Germans sailed back. In Berlin, Reacher tried to persuade the Fuehrer to immediately conduct another expedition, but by that time Germany was already in full swing preparing for war. Many conspiracy theorists believe that during the month that Reich and the rest of the expedition spent in Antarctica, they managed to discover a whole chain of ice caves and establish a secret military base there, to which, later, when the war was already lost, they transported the top of the Reich and Hitler himself.
However, there are direct facts indicating that all this is just a falsification of the fascist government. It would have been impossible to build such structures in such a short time, let alone transport a lot of people and equipment there.
Some critics go further and say that the "New Swabria" expedition is just a myth, designed to raise Germany's prestige in the world scientific community. Proponents of the secret Arctic base theory cite the fact that in 1943 German submarines often sailed near Antarctica. However, this is due to the fact that at a time when defeat was already inevitable, most of the values of the Nazis were exported to pro-fascist Argentina. Either way, the history of the Third Reich holds many secrets, but the secret bunker in Antarctica is not one of them.
