A letter from an employee of the legendary ship predicting its imminent wreck will be sold at an auction in the UK.
Three days before the sinking of the Titanic, 29-year-old mate Arthur Painin sent a letter to his family from the ship to Oxford, in which he informed them of the bad omen.
The worker told the relatives that the ship was doomed to inevitable destruction. In the letter, the man suggests that the Titanic will face the same sad fate as the Olympic ship, which collided with another ship in 1911. Both liners were owned by Cunard Line.
Paintin shared with his parents his observation that bad omens were accompanying the ship when the Titanic sailed away.
“I can say with confidence that the Titanic is much more beautiful than the Olympic, but not at all safer,” Painin writes to his family.
Eyewitnesses of the tragedy claim that they last saw Arthur on the bridge next to the ship's captain Edward John Smith. According to Andrew Aldridge of Henry Aldridge and Son of Devizes, Arthur Painin worked with the captain on the Olympic, after which he was offered to work on the Titanic.
The relic was kept by the relatives of the deceased for 100 years, after which it was transferred to Henry Aldridge and Son of Devizes. The letter, dated April 10, 1912, will be auctioned in London for $ 57,000.
