Mesopotamia means "Land between rivers", between the Euphrates and the Tigris. This territory stretches from the mountains of Armenia in the north to the Persian Gulf in the south. In the west, it borders on the Syrian steppe and semi-deserts of Arabia, and in the east - on the mountain ranges of Western Iran. Frequent floods of rivers contributed to the formation of fertile alluvial soil, which was enough for the flourishing of the first cities - states of ancient Sumer. More than 6 thousand years ago, a unique highly developed Sumerian civilization appeared in this area. Where the Sumerians came to these lands from is still a mystery.
The origin of the Sumerian language is also unknown, since linguists have not been able to establish its relationship with any of the known language families.
The deciphering of the Sumerian manuscripts shocked researchers. Here is a short list of the achievements of this highly developed civilization that existed at the dawn of the development of Egyptian civilization, long before the Roman Empire and Ancient Greece.
The Sumerians used the sexagesimal number system. Despite its cumbersomeness, it allows you to calculate fractions and multiply numbers up to millions, extract roots and raise to a power. In some respects, this system is even superior to the decimal system we currently use. Firstly, 60 has ten prime factors, while 100 has only 7. Secondly, it is the only system ideally suited for geometric calculations, and this is why it continues to be used in our time. for example, dividing a circle by 360 degrees, as well as in the modern way of calculating time, dividing an hour by 60 minutes, and minutes by 60 seconds.
Thousands of texts and illustrations on astronomy, mathematics, physics were discovered. Among them - in fundamental mathematics, calculating the areas of complex shapes, extracting roots, solving equations with two and three unknowns, the so-called golden proportions and Fibonacci numbers. Complex calculus systems of this kind began to be used with the advent of computer technology.

Sumerian doctors could heal fractures, amputate diseased organs, remove an eyesore, and systematize diseases. Medical procedures were described in special reference books, which contained descriptions of diseases, information about hygiene rules, and the use of alcohol for disinfection during surgical operations.

A sensational discovery in recent years has been the discovery of a collection of fragments of an unknown celestial body, having a common orbit, between Mars and Jupiter.
