The fortress building was laid 300 years earlier than previously thought

The first fortress building on the territory of the Novgorod Kremlin (Detinets) was laid about 300 years earlier than previously thought. Such conclusions follow from the report of Andrey Dolgikh, an employee of the RAS Institute of Geography, and Oleg Oleinikov, an employee of the RAS Institute of Archeology.

The scientists presented their report at the conference “Novgorod and Novgorod Land. History and Archeology.

Earlier it was believed that the first fortress on the territory of Detinets was built in the 13th century.

Excavations at the Prechistenskaya Arch in the center of Detinets discovered massive oak logs, which, presumably, were parts of the structures of ancient city fortifications. Cuts were made from them and sent for radiocarbon studies.

After research carried out in Russia and abroad, it turned out that the structures near the Prechistenskaya arch were erected approximately in 918.

The Novgorod Kremlin (Detinets) is a monument of federal significance, it is protected by UNESCO, most of its objects are under the jurisdiction of the Novgorod State Museum-Reserve.
