How can a square nebula form? Astronomers have not yet undertaken to give a definite answer. However, the stellar system of hot celestial bodies known as MWC 922 is apparently included in just such a nebula.

The above image combines two infrared images taken with the Hale telescope, located on Mount Palomar in California, and Keck-2, located at the top of the Hawaiian Islands - Mount Mauna Kea.

Scientists agree that the most likely reason for the appearance of the red square is conical gas emissions emanating from the central star or stars during the last stage of evolution. These cones in MWC 922, when viewed from certain angles, have nearly regular angles (60 °). The hypothesis is also confirmed by the presence of radial lines in the image, which create a visual effect in the form of walls along the cones.

The researchers speculate that when viewed from the base of any of the cones, they will look like giant rings of supernova 1987A. And that could mean the time will come when the MWC 922 will explode too.
