On the night of December 14, 2016, from about half past ten in the evening until 5 a.m., strange loud sounds prevented the residents of the city of Spokane Valley, which is located in Washington, USA, from sleeping (see video below).

More than 27,000 people went to the police with statements about the alarming howling sounds that spread throughout the Spokane Valley and caused a variety of assumptions, including apocalyptic fears.

The first culprits were snowplows, who allegedly worked all night, clearing the parking lot at the shopping center. However, this did not at all explain the fact that loud sounds were heard throughout the city, even at a considerable distance from the center.

Some even attributed the sound to the unusual properties of cold air.

“Temperature can affect the speed of sound, and because of this, some things can make completely different sounds than we are used to hearing. Sound actually travels faster in hot air than in cold air,”was the explanation given by a meteorological expert at a local television station.

It turns out that cold air can distort sounds beyond recognition, and to such an extent that they become like a trumpet orchestra. However, the sounds of trains passing and snow blowers running remained the same as before.

Another interesting hypothesis was put forward, which explained the howling sounds by the creak of railway rails, expanding and contracting from the cold. It would make sense if such a phenomenon had happened before. Indeed, in Spokane Valley, frost is a frequent guest.

Some have likened the mysterious trumpets to unusual low frequency fan-like sounds reported by many eyewitnesses around the world. However, their frequency is too low compared to the sounds in Spokane Valley.

Northern Lights? But its sounds are like crackling, and there was no question of the northern lights that night. Tectonic plate movement? Not in this area. The groans of whales or other sea creatures? But they are not distributed for several hours. The search for the sound source continues. Do you have any suggestions?
