Scientists from the USA and Canada have created a mathematical model of a time machine. The researchers' article was published in the journal Classical and Quantum Gravity, writes ScienceAlert.
According to experts, it is a “box” or “bubble” that allows passengers inside it to move into the past and the future. The machine itself must move along a circular path through space-time.
According to Einstein's theory of relativity, the existence of closed timelike curves (CTC) is possible in our universe. They can form only if the space-time continuum is curved in a special way, forming, for example, wormholes. If you move along these curves, you can travel to the future and the past, then returning to the starting point.
Various conditions have been invented under which the occurrence of STS is possible, however, in each case, time travel turns out to be impossible. Stephen Hawking proposed a hypothesis of the security of chronology, which states that an attempt to create closed timelike curves must necessarily lead to the appearance of a black hole. Nevertheless, the authors of the work believe that the existence of CTSs is possible, which are not subject to these restrictions.
Scientists have proposed a mathematical model of a time machine called TARDIS (Traversable Acausal Retrograde Domain in Spacetime). In its principle of action, it resembles the Alcubierre bubble, which allows the spacecraft inside it to reach superluminal speed. However, the TARDIS must move in a closed curve so that people in it experience constant acceleration. At the same time, an external observer will see two versions of travelers inside the bubble: for one, time flows normally, and for the other, in the opposite direction.
Although the existence of this time machine, according to the researchers, is theoretically possible, it remains unknown how the space-time can be curved.
The TARDIS time machine is featured in the British science fiction series Doctor Who. It tells about the adventures of an alien named Doctor on other planets and in different time eras.
