French archaeologists have discovered in Sudan a collection of ancient texts and tablets written in the ancient Kushite language, which cannot always be deciphered. The find is 2700 years old. This is reported by Science Alert.
The excavation site is located in the Sedinga area, where the ruins of a temple dating from the XIV century BC and dedicated to Thia, the wife of the Egyptian pharaoh Amenhotep III, are located. Since the 7th century BC, this site has become a "city of the dead" - a necropolis consisting of 80 pyramids and hundreds of tombs.
Ancient texts are located on tombs, lintels and steles and are written in the Meroite language, which was used from about the 2nd century BC to the 5th century AD in Nubia and northern Sudan.
The bearer of this extinct language was the people of the ancient kingdom of Kush, which was conquered by Egypt during the reign of Pharaoh Thutmose I. The Meroitic alphabet was created in the image of the ancient Egyptian, but some records are still not fully translated.
