British tourists vacationing on the beaches of Brittany (a province in northern France), warned of the deadly danger posed by the slimy algae that flooded the coast

Recently, the bodies of 31 wild boars were found among the seaweed on the coast of Brittany. According to experts, they all died from asphyxiation with toxic gases, almost as dangerous as cyanide. The gas was formed after the decomposition of the alloys in the heat of forty degrees.

The beaches around the bay, on the banks of which the wild boars were found, and into which the Moreau River carries its waters, are inundated every summer with tens of thousands of British vacationers who come here. This hot summer there are more of them here than ever.

A warning about dangerous algae was issued by the local government, which, however, indicated only a threat to health and did not mention mortal danger. And this despite the fact that just two years ago, a worker cleaning beaches from algae was sent to the hospital with severe poisoning. In 2009, he fainted at work from inhalation of toxic substances, and his horse died altogether.

Marine biologist Alain Minesgun says algae creates incredibly toxic gas. It smells like a rotten egg and if it gets into the lungs, it can kill both an animal and a person in a matter of minutes.

Why did these algae become so dangerous? It turns out that it's all about … pig farms. Nitrogen-rich pig waste from numerous onshore farms ends up in the sea and interacts with hydrogen sulfide in the algae when heated on the beaches.

- Probably, this can happen in any coastal area, just like Brittany is closely built up with pig farms. - says the biologist, - I am very concerned about the health of the people here.

Over the past ten years, the French government has consistently ignored petitions from local councils for the disposal of farm waste. Instead, it sends hired workers to clear the banks of the algae, which can only be compared with Sisyphean labor, for they reappear after a while.

Back in 2009, ecologist Jean-François Pico said that these measures will show themselves to chickens and dangerous algae.

-We already have five beaches closed for recreation. And what will happen next? It will get worse.

Despite the fact that Brittany has only 5% of the total number of agricultural farms in France, more than 60% of them are pig farms, which produce an awful amount of waste.

-Our rivers are short-lived, as workers cannot cope with pollution. Algae find themselves on the shore under the hot sun and begin to emit poisonous gas. Today they are wild boars, but tomorrow a child may die,”says Andre Olivro, the eyes of a local protester group.

Along the way, algae kill thousands of other animals, from crustaceans to fish, which are deprived of oxygen in the water.
