The incident occurred on the Italian coast near the village of Punta Aderci. A whole flock of sperm whales threw themselves onto the beach. Three of them are female. The length of the animals ranges from 7.3 to 8.9 meters.
Local residents immediately rushed to their rescue. Unfortunately, only four out of seven were able to help. They were sent to the north of the country so that specialists could thoroughly examine them and carry out the necessary treatment.
Now the territory where the sperm whales have thrown themselves is under the supervision of the coast guard. In the near future, scientists at the local university will begin an autopsy procedure to find out the cause of the mass suicide.
Recall that this is not the first time that sperm whales have been washed ashore. A similar story happened in November 2011 in Australia. Then 16 animals were thrown off the island of Tasmania. Scientists suggested that the sperm whales committed suicide, because could not bear the noise of the ships' engines.
In September 2012, 22 short-finned grind whales washed ashore in Florida. Experts explained this by parasites that infect the brains of animals, forcing them to go off course.
