A team of scientists from the Smithsonian Institution managed to prove that water on the surface of Mars has existed for a billion years longer. The relevant information is shared with the readers by the foreign edition of the Journal of Geophysical Research: Planets.
Sharon Wilson, one of the participants in the scientific work, noted that the experts were helped to come to this conclusion by the images obtained thanks to the work of the Mars Express probe and the special mission of NASA's Mars Global Surveyor. The probe took pictures of the northern polar regions of the "red" planet. There, scientists were able to find depressions that carried water into the lake basins. Some of the discovered pools were once overflowing with water, the researchers note. This is evidenced by the large amount of water on the surface of Mars at that time.
Also, scientists managed to determine that the filling of the pools with water occurred at a certain point in time, that is, seasonally. This was proved by measuring the length of the streams and the lakes they fill. From this scientific work, it follows that water on the surface of Mars was about 2-3 billion years ago.
