Abandoned urban infrastructure is becoming more common, and this is not surprising, because the population in all countries is constantly migrating - some areas or even entire cities become completely deserted, while others, on the contrary, are overcrowded. Many areas that once flourished in metropolitan areas are now teeming with abandoned pipelines and buildings.

In Milan, there have been many diggers lately looking for abandoned underground tunnels that often lead to huge artificial caves. One artist decided to transform these now-vacant rooms into functional underground rooms with stunning murals and decorations.

Although no one lives in these "secret rooms", the main purpose of this installation was to draw attention to the large number of people living underground around the world.

The Borderlife installation makes abandoned underground spaces completely suitable for people who are used to living in comfortable apartments, as well as for people who simply have no other choice.

For example, in Romanian Bucharest alone, more than 600 people are forced to live underground due to extreme poverty, many of them children. “If some problems cannot be avoided, they can be made more convenient,” says the artist, who wanted to draw public attention to the problem in this way.

People “forced” to live underground are creepy … but this problem, unfortunately, is becoming more common for those who cannot afford “normal” housing.

Therefore, a quite reasonable question arises of how to help poor people find more decent living conditions and stop living secretly from everyone underground. Due to abandoned utilities, and especially underground utilities, large premises are often left that are not used and are considered unusable or useless.

For modern diggers, exploring such underground infrastructure and secret rooms long forgotten by all under city streets can be very exciting.

The Milanese artist's installation not only provides stunning visuals for the audience, but also makes one wonder about how some people live. It includes three separate rooms, from which a full underground bathroom, kitchen and living room were made.
