Until the middle of the nineteenth century, the history of the Phoenician people was little studied, since all ancient writing and architecture were lost.

Mentions of this civilization were found only in the literary documents of other peoples, respectively, the data were rather contradictory. The discoveries of archaeologists have allowed for a clearer understanding of the Phoenicians.
However, the absence of any written evidence that has survived to this day, written by the Phoenicians themselves, still does not allow studying their culture in more detail.
From archaeological excavations it became known that the Phoenician civilization is about 6,000 years old. These lands were called Canaan. Their location was on the territory of modern Israel, Lebanon and Syria.
Phoenician society developed quite quickly due to their advantageous geographic location. Canaan was crossed by many trade routes linking east and west.
Using trade and colonization, the Phoenicians extended their influence to the Mediterranean and beyond. At that time, they had no equal in the field of geographical research, in addition, they maintained trade relations with all developed countries at that time.

The purple dye created by the Phoenicians was popular in the trade at that time. That is why in the ancient writings of the Romans this people is referred to as "Punas", which means "purple". Its modern name, by which the Phoenicians are known today, this people most likely received from the Greeks.
However, the greatest influence on all civilizations of the Old World was the creation of the alphabet, which was later studied and used by many peoples living near Canaan. Even the ancient Greeks used it to one degree or another.
