It is believed that the sculpture was carved out of a monolithic rock by order of Pharaoh Khafre. He ruled in 2500 BC. He also built the second largest pyramid at Giza. However, there is accurate evidence that Khefren built the Sphinx and even became the prototype of his face. However, this version is constantly disputed, because until now it has not been possible to find out the exact date of the sculpture.
Geologist Robert Schoch became interested in the Sphinx in the 1990s. He believed that the age of the monument (about 5000 years old) was determined incorrectly, and wanted to conduct research from a geological point of view. He confirmed that the statue was made of a monolithic limestone rock, and the wall surrounding the sphinx was also made of it.
So on the lower part of the sculpture traces of corrosion can be traced, which could not have formed due to sand or winds. Such traces are formed only when exposed to showers and streams of water. However, five thousand years ago, and this is how the Sphinx dates at the moment, there was an arid desert here. Based on this, Schoch concluded that the Sphinx was created between 5000 and 9000 BC, when the weather in this region was rainy.
However, Khefren is also involved in this sculpture, the geologist believes, but he only reconstructed the Sphinx. Robert noted that, most likely, the monument originally had a lion's head. During the repair, Khefren ordered to cut out his face instead of the image of a lion.

However, the geologist's colleagues do not support his theory, because the first civilization capable of building such a monument appeared in Egypt only with the Egyptians. Before that, no remains of such a powerful empire survived, which could hew such a monument out of the rock.
