In May 2007, the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter probe discovered a dark spot 5 meters in diameter on the surface of Mars northeast of Arsia volcano. The spot is perfectly round. Photo defect, film stain? Later, a similar spot appeared in other images taken by another probe, Mars Express.
In addition, six more similar black spots were found in new photographs. Strikingly, even in the pictures taken at maximum magnification, no detail was visible inside the spot. For comparison, images were taken of the most shaded areas of the surface of Mars. At high magnification, some small objects could be seen on them. It is likely that the spots found are holes with steep walls, something like mines, going hundreds of meters deep. Perhaps this is some kind of shelter from the deadly cosmic radiation. But who are these shelters for? Who built them and why? The walls of one of the largest mines in the photograph go at least 78 meters deep, the bottom is not visible, the opening is about 250 meters wide. Obviously, these are not craters left over from the fall of meteorites, because there are no ejected rocks next to them. Volcanic craters on Mars also look different. Similar mines "cenotes" are found on Earth. For example, in Mesquica - these are karst caves with a collapsed vault. But the entrances to these caves are far from ideal.
If there is life on Mars, then most likely it can be found in some cave,”the American geologist Judson Wynn believes. There, at the bottom of the caves, where sunlight does not get, ice must have accumulated, which means there is water, without which life is unthinkable. Some scientists do not exclude that a huge system of caves is hidden in the lava layers of Mars.
Martian “cenotes” are also arousing the interest of scientists thinking about how to populate Mars. Members of future expeditions could take refuge in caves. We could? What if the life forms inhabiting the labyrinths of the Martian caves are aggressive ?!
