Venus maintained stable temperatures in ancient times and had liquid water on its surface for billions of years before some catastrophic event caused radical changes on the planet, according to a new study presented to astronomers in Geneva.
At the moment, Venus is basically a dead planet with a toxic atmosphere. She is often called the sister or twin of the Earth, but in reality this is a bit different.
Atmospheric pressure on the surface of Venus is 92 times greater than on the surface of the Earth, and approximately equal to the pressure of water at a depth of 900 meters. In addition, Venus is the hottest planet in the solar system: its average surface temperature is 735 K (462 ° C). It is hotter than Mercury, despite the fact that Mercury is closer to the Sun.
However, a recent study compared five climate models of Venus's past, and to the great surprise of scientists, each scenario suggested that liquid water existed on the planet's surface in the recent past. At the same time, according to the most optimal computer climate model, the air temperature there was 68 - 122 degrees Fahrenheit (20-50 ° C). That is, it was an absolutely comfortable environment for the existence of protein life.
This went on for about 3 billion years, however, about 700 - 750 million years ago, an event caused a catastrophic release of carbon dioxide from the rocks, thereby radically changing the climate on the planet.
Michael Way, lead author of the study at the Goddard Institute for Space Sciences, presented his research paper at the European Planetary Sciences Congress, which was held last week in Geneva.
In an interview, Michael says:
“Our hypothesis is that Venus could have had a stable climate for billions of years. It is possible that there was some event close to the global warming observed on Earth now, as a result of which the accumulation of carbon dioxide in the planet's atmosphere turned Venus into a hellish greenhouse.

“Computer simulations show that Venus went through a rapid cooling phase several billion years after its formation. Then its atmosphere would be full of carbon dioxide. If Venus evolved similarly to Earth, this carbon dioxide would escape from the atmosphere, be attracted by silicates, and trapped on the surface. This would allow the atmosphere to be saturated with nitrogen with small amounts of carbon dioxide and methane, ensuring its stability."
“But something went wrong 700 million years ago. What - for researchers remains a mystery, although most often the release of carbon dioxide is associated with volcanic activity. As a result, the gas could not be synchronously absorbed by the surface, which led to the hellish greenhouse effect. It completely transformed Venus."

And it got warmer there not 700 million years ago, but relatively recently.
