American scientists have proposed an ambitious project to create the human genome from scratch
More than twenty well-known researchers from the United States announced their readiness to start a large-scale project to create the human genome. The essence of the concept is to synthesize the human genome by putting together pieces of DNA as cubes, rather than cutting and assembling them from existing genomes. Scientists emphasize that we are not talking (at least not yet) about creating an "artificial man". Meanwhile, according to the researchers, the project should become a kind of locomotive in terms of medicine and bioengineering. It can be a breakthrough in the treatment of many diseases.
As part of the first stage, scientists want to raise $ 100 million, and then, apparently, they plan to receive additional funds. The authors of the initiative say that for the synthesis of the human genome, in any case, funds will be needed that significantly exceed those that were spent on reading it. The total cost of the project could be one billion US dollars.
We will remind, earlier, according to media reports, prominent scientists, lawyers and businessmen in America discussed the possibility of creating a "man from a test tube." The organizer of the conference, however, hastened to reassure the public, saying that it was just about "the prospects for the production of long DNA strands."
