Short review: people disappeared without a trace in the valley, some survivors talked about thick fogs, where they lost their comrades. Expedition of the Academy of Sciences together with special services (the entire expedition returned, but many of them fell ill).
These are all stories about Heizhu Valley, Black Bamboo Hollow, China. However, at the bottom there will be a link to previous articles in which everything is described.
Moving on to the promised versions.
Version: Quicksand
During the investigation, the expedition of the Academy of Sciences led by prof. Yang Yun discovered quicksand in one place in the valley. This version explains well the absence of traces of missing people.

But for a group of experienced gamekeepers to fall into the quicksand? And before that, a detachment of as many as 30 soldiers happily ran into them? Completeness, even Hollywood hesitates to show this.
Version: Poison Gas
The same expedition of the Academy of Sciences found cracks in the rocks, from which poisonous gas, fluorine and mercury compounds are released. Getting into the zones of increased gas emission, people died.
This is a good attempt, this version explains well both the "fog" and the strange deterioration in well-being. But where are the remains of the poisoned? Where are the numerous animal carcasses?
Very weak, comrade Yang Yun. Weak!

But this is interesting. Moreover, this is a life version of the very joke “How did this war end many years ago? And I derail all the trains."
Such Japanese soldiers, indeed, were, forgotten in the forests and waging a war for the glory of the emperor many years after the end of the war. Even Kir Bulychev described this. And in the vicinity of Chongqing, military operations were very chaotic and fierce (thanks for the description, including Tyosli Lobsang Rampa), and this version is quite probable. That is why the missing groups were so fiercely searched in the 40s. People can ambush an armed detachment and hide the remains.
But the war with the Japanese ended, which is logical, in the same 1945. So that in 1976, 30 years later, to fool the jaegers' heads? It is doubtful, especially if you remember that the local peasants are afraid of this valley for god knows how many years or even centuries.
But the most charming version apparently comes from local peasants.
Version: Giant Man-Eating Panda
To be honest, I know pandas only from funny videos on the internet and zoos. But the version is absolutely adorable! The unofficial symbol of all of China: a panda, but - a giant size and hunting people in the fog! Or even a whole family of such pandas. Very cute, cute and hardcore.
But then again, on the other hand: the natives, as always, the sires, are not educated and stupid. And how many times have many Aboriginal "fantastic stories" turned out to be true? Not geologists should have been sent there, but zoologists and cryptozoologists.
In general, there are few normal versions, because the situation with the valley is completely incomprehensible. People enter the valley, fog - and people disappear into this fog.
And here's another thing …
I will express one more hint of the version on my own. Remember the movie "Predator" with Schwarzenegerr? "In hot summer years, evil settles in our jungle." This is not an empty place, there are such references from Latin America, from Africa, and now please: China. "No one has returned from Black Bamboo Hollow in the summer." There is a feeling that in summer (especially in hot years) something is happening on our planet. However, so far I have collected little statistics on such rumors, so let this remain just a hint.
Present time
Currently, Heizhu, Black Bamboo Hollow, claims to be one of the strongest anomalous zones in the world. It was still not enough for spontaneous combustion of people to begin to occur there.
But as elsewhere in such AZs, now you can freely go to this valley with a guided tour. And even listen to all these picturesque stories from the guides and buy souvenirs. Everything is quiet, everything is calm.
Maybe the activity has changed, the period of disappearances is over? Or is it just a hiking trail laid out in safe places where no one has ever disappeared? Did the events themselves take place somewhere else in this great valley, the Black Bamboo Hollow?
