Ordinary highways and autobahns are fraught with dangers no less, and sometimes even more, than all airways combined. In terms of the number of deaths, road transport, due to its massiveness, firmly holds the palm, and there is nothing surprising in the fact that ordinary drivers often face inexplicable phenomena of time dilation in critical situations:

“… I immediately noticed that some of the nuts on the motorcycle loosened slightly, but this could not pose a great danger, and because I was late for work, I decided to go. The sun had not yet risen, the track, as far as could be seen, was empty. The speed was decent. When the headwind finally woke me up, I took the key and began to tighten the nuts with my right hand, holding the steering wheel with my left … Suddenly a truck without lights appeared from the thinning darkness. Right in front of me! I jerked my hand - and there the key got stuck, it won't let my hand! I turned the motorcycle over to the side, it skidded … I fall on my side … I try to free my hand … It turns out that I pressed my sleeve with a nut … It seemed that I unscrewed it for a whole minute, but unscrewed it and saw that I was still falling on my side !!! (Alexander Sergeevich; North Caucasus, 1960s) …

1968, September - Aleksey Ivanovich Burenin, at that time a fifth-year student of the Physics and Chemistry Faculty of the Moscow Institute of Chemical Technology named after D. I. Mendeleev, was driving with his group to pick potatoes when the bus suddenly caught fire. So in June 1998 he told me the events of his student youth: “… For me, not only time slowed down, I kind of became out of time. It was not scary, there was only calm curiosity. I watched how the driver ran away from the cab, forgetting to open the doors for us, how the girls were hysterical, how they tried to break the windows … Calmly opened the doors, everyone rushed to the door, I calmly left the last one, after I returned with two guys for my things, then I went to the driver, advised him to drain the gasoline in order to avoid an explosion … The bus of course burned to the ground, but there was no explosion …”After a while A. Burenin in a mortally dangerous situation again experienced similar feelings …

1975 - Alexander Nikodimovich Basov also almost got into a car accident near Moscow: “The speed is about 80 km / h. We drive around a hill, and here, right in front of us, in the middle of the road, the Moskvich sharply slows down … And so I calmly sit and watch what is happening. Very smoothly, as if in slow motion, the hood of the car began to turn … Everything happens very slowly. But I turn my head to the driver and am surprised - his hands quickly, swiftly rotate the steering wheel! I was struck by this contrast. The hood of the car is already turning the other way. Now let's hit "Moskvich" - thought flows in normal time. But our car sails a few centimeters from the car and freezes, standing across the road. How long the driver and I stood motionless, I do not know. What I described took 58-60 seconds. In fact, it was only a few moments …”

“… I have memorized every little thing, every moment… A wheel burst, the car was suddenly thrown off the road, it hit the fence. I distinctly remember how slowly the pickets broke, how one of them suddenly arched and broke through the windshield, just opposite the driver. Its sharp end was pointed at his chest. I was stunned … However, my sixteen-year-old son Bob bent down sharply, and a sharp stake pierced through the seat!” (Wheeler's mother and son; Coventry, England; 1992) …

1991, August - my friend Leila Sabra, while driving the fifth model "Zhiguli", was distracted and drove at high speed into a temporary concrete fence on the road. “At the moment of the impact, time slowed down right away, I clearly saw how smoothly the glass was flying away …” The engine drove into the cabin, the steering column went above the head, everyone who saw the soft-boiled Zhiguli said that only corpses should have been left in the cabin. But … Leila herself escaped with minor bruises, and her two companions - with minor injuries … Curiously, this was the second such incident that happened to her …

1998 - such a letter came from a resident of the village of Priozerny (Leningrad Region), N. Nikitina: “… I crossed the street, forgetting that at this intersection the drivers always increase their speed. I ran, but it became clear that I would not have time to avoid being hit by the truck. And here I was, as it were, out of time. So it seemed to me then. I was expecting a blow, but it still was not and was not, but I could not run faster. And then, just as unbearably slowly, the car ran over me, and it was as if time had stopped altogether. The speed of thinking, meanwhile, remained the same, and I well understood that I was finished … I was so surprised by the unbearable smoothness of what was happening that I did not even try to find a way out of this situation … And then my consciousness turned off. So they turn off the light by pressing the button, and it turned off immediately and completely. I was lying on the asphalt in a strange position:knees and chin are pressed to the chest, arms are bent at the elbows, palms are extended forward. Kolobok pose. I was well aware of everything that had happened, my head was clear, but I could not straighten up in any way. The driver of the car that had hit me ran up, began to lift me, and I finally managed to get to my feet. And then I noticed that I was very far from the truck, a few meters in the direction of travel. The consequences of the collision were a bruise on the thigh (where the car hit) and slightly scratched palms and knees. It was necessary to group and roll in order not to get under the wheels. This was the only way to be saved. Who taught me? Who helped? After all, at the moment of danger, my consciousness was cut off from the horror that was approaching me. " [“ChiP” 1999, N 1, p.11] …I was well aware of everything that had happened, my head was clear, but I could not straighten up in any way. A similar case was described by E. Golomolzin: “With the chief geologist of the quarry, we returned from the site to the base on a motorcycle with a sidecar. It started to rain, and the road was instantly covered with a slippery clay crust … Suddenly a strong gust of wind pulled the miner's helmet off his head and threw it back onto the road. The driver jerked the steering wheel to the side in surprise, the motorcycle tilted and … Further … we found ourselves out of time, almost completely the time stopped … I sat in the wheelchair and watched with curiosity what was happening. The front wheel of the motorcycle turned almost ninety degrees, caught on an uneven road, and the motorcycle began to rise smoothly into the air with us.

Promotional video:

The driver caught my attention. His butt lifted over the saddle, but his hands, as if glued, continued to grip the steering wheel tightly. My head was raised high, and my eyes were peering into the horizon … Soon it was all over - at that very moment I was lying on the road under a motorcycle, and a trickle of gas was pouring down on me from above. How I managed to fall out of the wheelchair - I can't imagine! A colleague who ran to help freed me from the motorcycle, helping me to my feet. We felt ourselves and were surprised to find the absence of not only bruises, but even scratches. According to my colleague, the accident happened to him instantly - he jerked the steering wheel to the side and immediately found himself on the road in front of the overturned motorcycle …"

Another case of Golomolzin was in Bashkiria, where his geological team was relocated to a new area of work. On the day of departure, as in the previous case, bad weather broke out. “… The rain turned into a large hail, which beat violently on the cabin and the awning of the geological GAZ-66, loaded to the brim with boxes with samples and field equipment. The road ran along the edge of an abyss through a mountain pass. Crushed stone on the road was mixed with mud and presented a rather unreliable “surface” of the road, as the wheels often slipped, causing a displeased roar of the engine. In case of an unexpected evacuation, despite the severe hail, we sat right next to the cockpit, throwing back the front canopy of the tarpaulin awning.

I did not record the moment when this happened, but I heard how suddenly the strained howls of the engine turned into a completely monotonous monotonous roar. Surprised, I looked down at the road and saw that at the turn with the rise, the car began to slowly drift to the edge of the cliff. The wheels were spinning at a breakneck speed, but the car stood still and terribly slowly, literally by a millimeter, moved towards the abyss. Time to jump, I thought. The extreme slowness of the action caused a feeling of confidence that everything could be done. There was a feeling that one could safely jump from the body to the ground and go around the car sliding off the road several times.

I looked back at my fellow travelers. They sat with petrified faces, looking far ahead, not paying any attention to the fact that a catastrophe was about to occur. "Why are they hesitating?" - I was surprised. By the way, I did not feel neither rain nor hail at that moment. Suddenly, something changed in the sound of the engine running, a new bass note appeared, and the car began to slowly crawl away from the edge of the cliff, where the sheer cliffs were already visible. Immediately, the roar of icy heavenly grapeshot fell on me. When we arrived at the scene, it turned out that no one noticed the critical situation. When the car was carried into the abyss, the driver immediately turned on the second bridge and easily brought it back onto the road …"

Don't you think that more and more coincidences appear in the stories about this incomprehensible event? But do not rush to conclusions, we will try to draw them later … By the way, after reading this letter from Golomolzin, I remembered an incident I had forgotten quite well, which happened a long time ago on a winter mountain serpentine road. Everything happened in exactly the same way, and the car was of the same brand, GAZ-66, and the situation (the driver barely turned on the front axle at the last moment), and I also sat on the edge of the side and saw everything “as in slow motion” … But everything was forgotten, because that day we went to the mountains on alarm to intercept the border violators, and all subsequent events made us completely forget about some "trifles" …

Vitaly Ch.: “Around 1970, my grandfather and I were returning home. He had already crossed the road, something delayed me, and grandfather Stepan made a sign to me to stop … I was almost running up to him, when I suddenly saw that my sandals had fallen off my foot. Everything happened purely automatically - I simply turned around, ran to the middle of the road, picked him up and returned, while realizing what an unforgivable, deadly stupidity I was committing. As I ran, out of the corner of my eye, I noticed that the car stopped, but as soon as I ran to the side, it, still at high speed, whistled next to me. It turns out that everything happened very quickly, so quickly that my grandfather did not even notice how I was returning …"

1976 - even at a time when I was practically not interested in the physics of Time, I almost literally remembered Galina Nosik's story. We waited for an ambulance for more than an hour, so she managed to repeat her story many times: “I fell off the bike for a very long time, the car stopped in front of me rooted to the spot and stood like that throughout the entire time while I was flying to the ground. I did not feel pain, although I realized that the bone of my arm had burst; I saw myself all the time as if from the side. And the car took off again … brakes screeching. So, constantly braking, it stopped only after 20-30 m. I disconnected only after that …"

Once Y. Roscius was told about another accident, which engineer Lyudmila Karaeva described as follows: “The collision … happened instantly, but for me it lasted a very long time and slowly … I saw how the side window of the truck became cloudy and how slowly, as in slow motion, shards of glass began to fall to the ground.” [“Question mark” 1994, N 3/4, p.55] …

1999, late spring - at one of the American stadiums, a motorcycle racer lost control and crashed into a fence in front of thousands of spectators. And millions of TV viewers could see the same thing with the eyes of the victim - a TV camera was installed on the motorcycle itself … A couple of weeks later, the plastered motorcycle rider shared his impressions in front of the TV camera: “The most interesting thing is that time seemed to slow down, stretch out. I felt the long seconds that the catastrophe lasted, as very long, but at the same time I remembered that each of these seconds could be the last …”[TV show“You are an eyewitness”TV-6, aired on 17.06.1999 at 9.25 am]. Let us add from ourselves that that is why he was saved by the extended seconds, that he perceived them as possibly the last …
