Swiss authorities have recorded 28 cases of Zika mosquito infestation since the beginning of the year, media reported on Monday.

All infected people have previously traveled to areas affected by the aedes aegypti mosquito virus, which has created a pandemic in regions of South and Central America and the Caribbean, Xinhua reported. Four Swedes have traveled to the Dominican Republic, three cases to Colombia and Martinique, and two more to Brazil and Bolivia. This is reported in a report from the Swiss Federal Office of Public Health.

The number of infections could be higher, although data show that only four infected people develop symptoms like fever, rash, joint pain and conjunctivitis. Although rarely fatal, Zika poses a danger to pregnant women as their unborn babies develop microcephaly, a defect with an abnormally small brain. In 2015, the virus was discovered in Brazil, reporting its first case since being spread by mosquitoes last May.
