A 19-year-old young man, a native of the village of Verkhne-Spasskoye, in 1930 he rafted wood along the Vetluga River. Back his team returned along the river bank on foot.
“The coast was low and swampy. We decided to stop and spend the night at the edge of the swamp. At night the raftsmen were awakened by loud sounds. A terrible roar came from the side of the swamp. In the light of the moon, on a small elevation, the silhouette of the animal was clearly visible. A rather large individual, stretching out its neck, made a sound similar to a roar. Several more voices answered her call. But something alarmed the creature, and after issuing another roar and making a few awkward movements, it slipped from the hill into the swamp abyss,”says the hero's eldest son.
Of course, the members of the brigade were amazed. In the morning they came to the conclusion that the animals that emitted a terrible roar were turtles. Only very large. The hero of this story has told this story to his sons more than once.
