Japanese paleontologists conducting excavations on the island of Hokkaido have identified a well-preserved skeleton of a previously unknown species of dinosaur. It belongs to hadrosaurs or, as they are also called, platypus dinosaurs, but differs significantly from the species already recorded.

Its tail was partially discovered back in 2003, and only much later excavations revealed the entire skeleton. And just recently, a team of scientists announced its definition and attribution to a new species. The new species was named Kamuysaurus japonicas, which means "divine lizard from Japan." Its main difference is that it possessed dorsal spines having a slightly different inclination and a shortened jawbone, which, moreover, had a lower position. The absence of the head ridge, characteristic of many other species, is also noted. Scientists have determined the age of the discovered skeleton as 72 million years. Presumably it was an adult of about nine years old. He could move on both two and four limbs. It was about eight meters high and weighed 4-5 tons. As noted by scientists, such a unique find, both in belonging and in the degree of preservation, will help them better navigate a huge variety of dinosaurs, and in the process of evolution as a whole.
