The poltergeist is perhaps the most famous and scariest type of ghost. It is a spirit that harasses and torments its victims.
This harassment typically includes minor but mysterious and disturbing events such as loud noises, moving furniture, sheets and bedspreads removed from beds, small objects inexplicably falling from shelves, stones rising from the ground and throwing themselves into people, and so on.
No one knows for sure who ghosts are or whether they really exist. Some believe that ghosts are the restless souls of people who once lived, while others think that ghosts are the souls of people whose death was violent or premature.
Poltergeists and pranks
Poltergeist activity is focused on people and is often associated with the presence of children. Indeed, many reports of poltergeists have been proven to be faked by children and adolescents, and one notable case of alleged poltergeist activity in the mid-1800s even led to the creation of the American religion.
This happened in western New York in the early 1840s, when a young merchant arrived at Mr and Mrs Bell's home to sell his home furnishings. He was invited into the house by the housekeeper and remained there for several days. The maid was soon dismissed from the service, but a week later she was hired again. The peddler was gone, but many of his items were now in use in the kitchen. The maid gave little thought to this until she noticed the strange and sinister manifestations of otherworldly power in the house. Later, the woman learned that during her absence, the merchant was killed in this house.
At least it was a story told by two young sisters named Maggie and Katie Fox, who claimed to communicate with the ghost of the peddler through tapping and knocking. The Fox sisters have become famous throughout the country for their ability to communicate with the spirits of the dead, gathering enthusiastic crowds for decades. However, years later, the sisters admitted that it was all a hoax. There was no murdered merchant, and ties to the spirits were a hoax. However, the sisters accidentally founded a religion called Spiritualism, which is still practiced in some areas today.

The characteristic noise and knocking when communicating with spirits originates in a hoax. Decades later, many psychics continue this practice, pretending that knocking in dark seance rooms comes from the spirit world. But, despite the huge number of fraudsters and their active activities, there is a huge number of photos and videos proving the reality of what is happening. Are there poltergeists outside of folklore and historical hoaxes? It is difficult to answer this question unambiguously, but inexplicable phenomena continue to happen to dozens of people every day. Although there is no scientific evidence for the existence of poltergeists or any other type of ghost, they continue to intrigue, entertain, and frighten the general public.
