The title of this article sounds like the title of a cheap adventure movie, but it all happened in real life and exactly as it says.

In 2011, a team of researchers discovered the remains of an ancient Aztec city in the jungle of Honduras. According to the group, it was the legendary lost “City of the Monkey God”, and among archaeologists, this place is mostly known as “La Ciudad Blanca” (White City). These ruins are located in the Mosquito region, the deportation of Gracias a Dios (Paranormal news - paranormal-news.ru).

The stories about the "White City" were heard by the Spanish conquistador Hernan Cortez. It was reported to him that somewhere in the jungle lies a very rich settlement, but no one knows the way to it.

In 1927, the famous pilot Charles Lindbergh reported seeing the White City flying over eastern Honduras, and over the next decades, other adventurers and travelers reported the same thing.

When, ten years ago, a group of Honduran and American explorers stumbled upon the nearly overgrown ruins of an Aztec city in the area, they thought they had found the White City. Their findings were later criticized many times as amateurish, but they did find many Aztec artifacts here.

According to the stories of local Indians, this city was abandoned by its inhabitants in 1520 after a terrible disease "eating bodies" overwhelmed its inhabitants. The Aztecs called this disease "the curse of the Gods" and when they fled from the city, they never returned to it.

Among the researchers was the writer and adventurer Douglas Preston, who later wrote a book about this city and the fact that the "Curse of the Gods" actually existed.

Almost half of the group of researchers caught a dangerous infection while among the Aztec ruins, which manifested itself only a few months after they returned from the jungle.

Preston himself was also among the infected and once discovered on his body something that looked like an insect bite. And this wound not only did not heal, but became larger and larger.

And when Preston and many others went to the doctors, they were diagnosed with parasitic leishmaniasis. This is a very dangerous disease that, when neglected, can literally deprive a person of his face.

“The parasite migrates to the lining of your nose and mouth and then begins to eat these tissues. First your nose falls off, then your lips fall off. As a result, your face turns into a huge open wound,”says Preston.

Of course, modern medicine is able to treat such an infection without bringing the disease to such terrible results. Preston (and the other members of the group) did not lose his nose or lips, escaping with a scar where the wound used to be.

However, in past centuries, for the Aztecs, such an infection was really like a divine curse, disfiguring their bodies and faces.

Leishmaniasis is spread by mosquitoes and the Mosquito region is apparently full of mosquitoes. It is also full of swamps and swampy lowlands, which are teeming with poisonous snakes. One can only guess for what reason the Aztecs built their city here.

It is because of the dangerous carnivorous infection that neither Preston nor other researchers want to risk any more and return to the "White City".
