Microsoft and Amazon have announced they will not sell facial recognition technology to the US police.
Microsoft has decided to restrict the use of facial recognition systems and will not sell this technology to the police until federal law governs the technology.
"We will not sell facial recognition technology to police departments in the United States until the country enters into federal law based on human rights," said the president of the American company, Brad Smith.
Microsoft has promoted facial recognition technology as part of its Azure cloud computing platform. As noted, developers can use the facial recognition system in their applications to provide an easy and highly secure user experience. Microsoft technology is used, for example, by Uber.
A similar statement was made by another company - Amazon. “We hope this one-year moratorium will give Congress enough time to implement the appropriate rules, and we are ready to help if needed,” Amazon said in a statement.
The company also emphasizes that the ban does not apply to organizations that are looking for children or are fighting against human trafficking, they can still use the program in their work.
