Among the vast array of mountains in Altai, beautiful and different, Mount Babyrgan (in some readings Bobyrgan) is special.

First, the fact that Gorny Altai actually begins with it - this fact makes it a tourist attraction. This is the northernmost peak of the Seminsky ridge and the very first mountain for travelers following the Chuisky tract to Gorny Altai. In good weather, it can be seen already from Biysk, and at the entrance to the border of the Altai Republic near the village of Svoboda Valley, a particularly picturesque view of Babyrgan opens up - from here, in the outlines of the mountain, you can guess the head of a sleeping hero.

View of Mount Babyrgan. For Altai shamans, this mountain is sacred and is one of the six sacred mountains of Altai. Its correct name is Baraby-Kan, or Sary-Kel.

Mount Babyrgan is located on the border of the Altai and Soviet regions on the left bank of the Katun, 14 km from the village of Platovo. Its absolute height is 1008.6 m, the elevation above the Katun level is 700 meters. The top of the mountain is a plateau on which numerous outliers are located, with picturesque weathering in the form of towers and fortresses from 2 to 20 meters high. The mountain is composed of Middle Devonian granites and syenites. Mount Babyrgan is the northernmost peak of the so-called "northern face of Altai". It has been a natural monument of regional significance since 1998.

The name of the mountain is translated from Altai as “flying squirrel”, which is apparently due to the fact that the mountain is a harbinger of a change in the weather. However, it is possible that it may bear someone's name.

Babyrgan was named the ancient sanctuary for a reason. There are legends and legends that for many centuries rituals were held on the mountain, since it was a clan totem for several local Altai clans: sekov todosh, ochy, chapta and chagandyk. In 2009, archaeologists discovered 8 archaeological sites in the vicinity of the mountain: 2 settlements, 4 single mounds and 2 mound groups. No archaeological excavations have been carried out on the mountain itself. Tourists and local residents say that various luminous formations, thunderstorms and atmospheric anomalies are often observed over Mount Babyrgan. Thus, the Novosibirsk Doctor of Geological and Mineralogical Sciences A. N. Dmitriev believes that there is a thunderstorm anomalous triangle between the villages of Maima, Platovo and Mount Babyrgan, which is characterized by significantly increased thunderstorm activity. He refers to studies that have shown that here in 60 seconds there are 100 or more lightning discharges, while in other places during the same time only up to 15.

Also Melnikova E. E. from 2009-2011 Investigations of the mountain were carried out, revealing several local anomalous zones. All this may be of undoubted interest for scientists, researchers of anomalous zones, stalkers.

Not far from the mountain near the village. Platovo is a geological natural monument “Earth ripple of catastrophic flood”, which happened 15-25 thousand years ago. Traces of this ripple in Altai, clearly appear only near Platovo and in the Kurai steppe of the Altai Republic.
