It was decided to go on reconnaissance light and find out what was the matter. A variety of versions were put forward, the explanation of the natives that the gods live in the mountains was not even considered, the seismic origin of the phenomenon observed at night was also in doubt.
Perhaps there was a political or military explanation - in those years, Indonesia and Holland were "at knives" just because Irian belonged to a disputed territory, and it is quite possible that there was a base of Indonesian rebels or saboteurs in the mountains, and the Dutch Air Force carried out a bombing raid …
But for a number of reasons, this version also did not inspire confidence. Firstly, the locals have not heard of any insurgents, and the saboteurs would certainly have been noticed, otherwise they would not have agreed to go to the mountains with an expedition at all. Secondly, it is unlikely that bombers flew at night in such difficult mountain conditions, moreover, no one heard the sounds of engines at night. Thirdly, during the bombardment, concussions would probably have been felt, but there were none, but given the remoteness of the explosion site and its relative weakness, there might not have been strong, noticeable concussions. Then the fourth version was born - swamp gas exploded in the mountains. And although there are usually no swamps in the mountains, the area where the Dutch went was a high plateau with several lakes, some of which could have long turned into real swamps.
So, the Dutch took with them only weapons and provisions for a few days, and set out. They expected to reach the site before dusk, but in reality they reached it in just two hours. They came to the edge of a forest that ended in a large rocky depression with rocky edges. According to the map, there should have been a large lake at this place, but it was not, and the depression was a pit 200 meters in diameter in its widest part and 20-30 meters deep. At the first glance, it was clear that the water in this pit was still yesterday, but it disappeared somewhere in a strange way.
But this was not what surprised the members of the expedition most of all. At the farthest edge of the hollow, they saw a strange disk, adhering to a high rocky slope and people scurrying around it. The disc was 50 meters in diameter and 10 meters high, had a silvery color and a high rounded squiggle in the center of the upper part. The rocks around this disc, and especially from above, were heavily soot, the bottom of the depression in the place where it stood was covered with heaps of some kind of red sand, from which there was a faint smoke. The Dutch hid among the bushes, trying not to be noticed from the side of the disk, because it was completely incomprehensible what it was.
Having examined the people scurrying around him through binoculars, the Dutch were even more surprised, they were literally dumbfounded from what they saw. If they were people, they were very strange, more like monkeys dressed in shiny green overalls. Their legs were very short, and their arms were disproportionately long, yet they moved not like monkeys, but like real people. On their heads they wore something like high-altitude pressure helmets, only completely transparent. What these strange monkey people were doing was not entirely clear, it felt like they were moving around their disk chaotically, but after watching them for a while, the Dutch realized that the aliens were clearing the space around the disk of red sand, because every minute it it got smaller and smaller. Martens had a movie camera and he started filming everythingwhat was happening in the pit, trying not to miss the slightest detail. True, the sun interfered with the shooting - the angle was not very good, and therefore it was decided to imperceptibly move to the other "coast" of the depression.
Suddenly there was a noise behind them, and the Dutch saw that three of these strange aliens approached them from behind. There was an opportunity to take a closer look at them - they actually looked like monkeys in physique, but their heads, enclosed in transparent round caps, were far from monkeys. Their faces were especially prominent with bulging dirty green eyes with narrow vertical pupils, like cats, there was no nose as such, there were only two holes for nostrils above wide lipless mouths. Their skin color was dark gray, there was no hair on the face and head. They were dressed in shiny green jumpsuits without any visible seams and actually resembled aliens from science fiction novels. There was no weapon, or something similar to it, in their hands. The terrified Dutchmen took them at gunpointbut the aliens did not show any visible aggression, they just looked at people and communicated with each other using some kind of mouse squeak.

Martens thought that it all looked somehow unreal, perhaps the aliens were in fact some kind of aliens, and the strange disk was their spaceship. He ordered his frightened assistants to slowly retreat into the depths of the jungle, and as soon as they did his order, he followed them. The aliens did not show any aggressive aspirations, they just stood and looked at the leaving people and did not move.
