In 1562, the most detailed map of America and Africa at that time was published in Antwerp. King Philip II of Spain immediately approved it as an official one.
To the credit of cartographers, the main geographic features (the Amazon and Parana river basins, Lake Titicaca, the territory of Mexico, Florida and the ocean coast) were plotted with extreme accuracy.
At the same time, the creators (Jerome Coc and Diego Gutierrez) did not skimp on artistic details: the canvas, 93 by 86 centimeters in size, depicts parrots, monkeys, all kinds of sea monsters and giants of Patagonia. The picture is complemented by numerous settlements, rivers, mountains and bays, as well as an erupting volcano on the territory of modern Mexico.
In addition to giant dragons and a formidable cannibal, there is an equally intriguing picture in the lower left corner. Near Tierra del Fuego - where the Strait of Magellan is located - the ship sails towards the undine, in whose hand is a mysterious object resembling a disc-shaped UFO.
Skeptics argue that there is no flying saucer there and that it is just a bizarrely curved mirror, looking into which the mermaid is combing her hair. But inveterate ufologists are difficult to dissuade.
