Lake Karakul - translated from the Kyrgyz language sounds like "Black Lake". It is located in the northern part of the Pamir mountain system on the territory of Tajikistan. The age of the lake is determined by hundreds of millions of years. But it is of primary interest because of the stories of numerous witnesses about the water monster that lives here.
The origin of the Karakul lake
"Black Lake" is conventionally divided into 2 parts. The eastern part has a depth of 22 meters, the western part in some places - up to 235 meters. This is an endless lake with bitter-salty water, and its very origin raises many questions, the answers to which scientists give only in the form of assumptions.
One of the most popular versions of the formation of the lake is the version of a celestial body colliding with the earth. This is evidenced by the relief of the area, as well as the characteristic change in rocks that occurred under the influence of high temperatures. The age of the youngest rocks is 230-190 million years.

Local residents who have been to Lake Karakul tell about a certain monster that lives in its waters. Allegedly, this monster is not hiding at all and can appear at any moment, curiously examining people. However, the descriptions are somewhat different.
So, some saw a huge fish, others claim that it is, rather, a giant snake. Still others speak of a horned creature whose head looks like the head of a bull. But the testimonies agree on one thing: when the monster appears, strange sounds are heard, reminiscent of a low-frequency roar.
Rumors of a monster are not groundless. Local legend tells of a huge snake that lives in caves located in this area. This is the "King of earthly reptiles", to whom the fishermen brought part of the catch. In return, they received a guarantee of calm hunting and fishing. And if you are greedy and do not share with the monster, next time your luck will turn away, you will return home empty-handed. And even worse - you get bogged down in a swamp, get lost in the mountains. People still say that sometimes they see huge old snake skin on the banks of the Karakul.
The lake spirit also dwells here. It is often seen in the form of a light cloud that takes on intricate shapes and moves above the water.
What the researchers say
All these legends attract tourists and explorers. The former want to see mysterious phenomena with their own eyes, the latter - to find explanations for them. So far, no research team has found the mysterious Snake King or snake skin on the shore.
